COMPLETED

In four strategic phases, Literacy for Life will bring hope to the local Sagyimase people. The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on the education of children across Ghana with student education being completely disrupted for months. As an organization whose main goal is to strengthen child literacy, we are working to increase our capacity and response to provide children with the learning resources needed to continue their literacy development.

Phase 1 – COMPLETED

Phase 1 included initial fundraising and land preparation. The initial phase began in September 2019. During this phase, the “idea” began to take shape. Phase 1 included initial coordination meetings and scoping discussions with local Ghanian partners. In this phase, we acquired the land for the library facility and had extensive conversations regarding project goals. Although Literacy for Life was impacted by COVID-19 in 2020, Literacy for Life still made progress towards its goals, even managing to work with local architects to develop plans and secure initial funding.

Phase 2 – COMPLETED

Phase 2 took our Founder Alice Otchere to Ghana to formally meet with the contractors and partnered non-profit representatives to discuss design plans, formalize the architectural plan, and develop the construction plan. During this visit, Otchere visited the site to survey the land, complete all formal permitting for the 1,300 square feet library with several reading spaces for various age groups. Once all permitting is complete, the foundation work begins.

Phase 3 – COMPLETED

Phase 3 is when full construction of our library facility will begin. During this phase, we will build the structure of the building, begin plumbing, electrical and wiring work while completing roofing, floor and wall tiling and other interior structures.

Phase 4 – COMPLETED

The interior has been completed, along with furnishing the mail reading hall and the separate reading rooms which are designated for Children and Adults. With the support of local and regional leaders, community elders/leaders and the community at large, the Juliana Frimpomaa Library was commissioned on Monday, October 16, 2023. Day to day operations began, Monday November 6, 2023.
